Why are there no Presidential candidates on my Vote-by-Mail  primary ballot!?!

Check your primary election ballot as soon as you get it in the mail. Your primary election ballot will not include candidates for President if you are registered as No Party Preference (NPP).

Changing Primary Party Preference

If you are registered NPP and you want to vote in a political party's primary you have until February 25th to get your ballot changed.  How you do that depends on which party's primary you wish to vote in.

  • The Green, Peace & Freedom, and Republican parties do not permit crossover voting . If you want to cast a ballot for the Green, Peace & Freedom or Republican party, and that party was not on your original Vote-by-Mail ballot, you must totally re-register to vote, specifying your party:
    • Go to the online Voter Registration form  and fill it out as if you were registering for the first time. At the question "Do you want to choose a political party preference?" select the party you want for permanent registration.
    • Request a replacement ballot by calling (408) 299-VOTE (8683) or toll free (866) 430-VOTE (8683).
  • For the American Independent, Democratic or Libertarian parties, you have two choices. You can either:
    • Permanently change your party preference by re-registering to vote:

      1. Go to the online Voter Registration form  and fill it out as if you were registering for the first time. At the question "Do you want to choose a political party preference?" select the party you want for permanent registration.
      2. Request a replacement ballot by calling (408) 299-VOTE (8683) or toll free (866) 430-VOTE (8683).

      OR

      • Cast a one-time "crossover primary ballot." You'll need to:
        1. fill out a Santa Clara Registrar of Voters form online - the Vote by Mail Ballot Application - Preferred Party form.
        2. Print it
        3. Sign and date it
        4. mail it so it arrives before February 25
        5. Request a replacement ballot by calling (408) 299-VOTE (8683) or toll free (866) 430-VOTE (8683).
